Accessing Early Intervention Services Through Health Insurance

A mother and toddler play with colorful alphabet blocks, stacking them on a table in a bright room, conveying a sense of learning and possible early intervention.
Did you know that early intervention (EI) services are different than Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and therefore, your child might not be receiving the highest quality care?

When most families receive an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis, they typically begin accessing services through the state-run Early Intervention System. However, it’s important to note that Early Intervention (EI) services are different from Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which means your child might not be receiving the highest quality of care. While some individuals who provide Early Intervention services may have experience in ABA, not all do. ABA is the only scientifically proven treatment for ASD.

Another way to access ABA services for your child under 3 years old is through private health insurance. Using private insurance can help ensure that your child receives high-quality services from a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). To receive ABA early intervention services through insurance, your child must have a diagnosis of ASD or a related disorder from a qualified professional, typically a neurologist. Not all insurance plans cover ABA therapy; coverage depends on your insurance company and the state in which you live. If you use insurance or go through the state, you may have a copayment.

To find out more about your insurance coverage, you can call your insurance company or reach out to Graham Behavior Services at (848) 888-3204, and we can check your benefits for you. If your plan does not include ABA benefits, please consult the Autism Speaks toolkit for insurance coverage options here: https://www.autismspeaks.org/health-insurance-coverage-autism.
